The Seymchan meteorite, a significant pallasite discovered in 1967 in the Magadan district of Russia near the Hekandue River, was initially classified as an anomalous IIE coarse octahedrite. However, after olivine crystals were found in recently recovered fragments in 2004, it was reclassified as a Main Group pallasite. This meteorite features a metallic matrix of iron and nickel, often showcasing the Widmanstätten pattern—a crystalline structure created by slow cooling of molten metal within a differentiated asteroid's core over millions of years.
Seymchan's composition is notable for its high iridium levels, setting it apart from typical pallasites. These rare meteorites make up less than 1% of all known meteorites and are thought to come from the core-mantle boundary of a planetary body. The meteorite's structural stability is highly valued by collectors and researchers because it is considered more stable and rust-resistant than other iron-rich meteorites. The largest piece recovered weighs around 1.5 tons and is displayed at the Moscow Planetarium for public viewing.
