Cretaceous Age (66-145 million years ago)

Burmese Amber, also called Burmite or Kachin amber, originates from the Hukawng Valley in northern Myanmar. It is estimated to be about 99 million years old, dating back to the early part of the Cenomanian stage of the Late Cretaceous. Amber is a resin derived from fossilized conifer tree sap that has undergone extensive pressure and heat over the years. This yellow to reddish-brown, translucent substance has been utilized in jewelry, Egyptian burial practices, and traditional healing. Additionally, amber is crucial for scientific research, often containing inclusions such as insects, animals, and plants that are preserved within it. These inclusions provide valuable insights into ancient life, leading to significant discoveries like feathers on a 145-million-year-old non-avian dinosaur and the biosynthesis pathways for new antibiotics.
