Cretaceous Age (66-145 million years ago)

Burmese amber, also called Burmite or Kachin amber, is an extraordinary fossilized resin formed during the early Cenomanian stage of the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 99 million years ago. Originating in northern Myanmar’s Hukawng Valley, this amber was produced by resin secreted from ancient conifer trees and fossilized over millions of years under heat and pressure.

What makes Burmese amber scientifically unique is its ability to preserve organisms with incredible fidelity. Inclusions of insects, arachnids, plant fragments, and even small vertebrates offer researchers an unparalleled window into prehistoric ecosystems. These specimens have helped paleontologists reconstruct biodiversity, study evolutionary adaptations, and uncover early evidence of features such as feathers and ancient reproductive behaviors. Burmese amber remains one of the most important Cretaceous fossil resins for research worldwide.
