Name: Maiasaura
Type: Herbivore
Size: 9 meters in length.
Maiasaura is a genus of large, herbivorous saurolophine hadrosaurid (“duck-billed”) dinosaurs that lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, approximately 65 to 70 million years ago. In 1978, a remarkable nesting site belonging to Maiasaura was discovered in the Two Medicine Formation near Choteau, Montana, U.S.A.
This dinosaur had a short, broad, and toothless bill, with hundreds of small teeth located further back in its mouth that were used for chewing and grinding plant material. It possessed a low head with a small bony crest between its eyes and a long, pointed tail. Like other duck-billed dinosaurs, its hind legs were longer than its front limbs, suggesting it could move both bipedally and quadrupedally. It is estimated that Maiasaura took about seven to eight years to reach full maturity, growing to around eight meters in length and weighing up to four metric tons.
