Sardonyx is a chalcedony variety, a microcrystalline quartz distinguished by its distinct banded layering. This specimen typically presents alternating bands in green, white, and occasionally brown or red hues. The name "sardonyx" is derived from the Greek terms "sard," meaning a reddish stone, and "onyx," meaning fingernail or claw, alluding to the mineral’s stratified formation.

Sardonyx has been valued since antiquity for its beauty and supposed protective properties. In ancient Rome and Greece, it was often used in intaglio carvings for seals and cameos. The green variety specifically was believed to bring good fortune and enhance communication skills. It was also associated with various deities in different cultures, symbolizing strength and stability

Green sardonyx features a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, offering considerable durability ideal for fine jewelry. Its specific gravity falls between 2.58 and 2.64, consistent with quartz minerals. When polished, it reveals a vitreous sheen and varies from translucent to opaque, influenced by the thickness of its banded layers.
