Celestite, also referred to as Celestine, is a strontium sulfate mineral distinguished by its characteristic pale blue coloration. It appears in crystalline habit as well as in compact, massive, and fibrous forms. This mineral predominantly occurs within sedimentary rock environments, frequently in association with gypsum, anhydrite, and halite. Although present globally, Celestite is generally encountered in limited concentrations, with notable pale blue crystal deposits originating from Madagascar.

The renowned Madagascar site, discovered in 1967, yields approximately 15 tons of celestite annually. Situated near Sakoany village along the western banks of the Betsiboka River, the celestine layer forms a lens up to 30 meters thick, embedded between crinoidal limestones and sandy greywacke dating from the late Cretaceous period. Access to the deposits is gained by mining shafts up to 15 meters deep. This mineral appears predominantly in two forms: geodes reaching up to 60 centimeters in diameter and crystal clusters measuring up to 15 centimeters across.
