Agate refers to a variety of banded Chalcedony, a mineral within the Quartz family, named after the Achates River in Sicily, where it was first discovered. Typically showing layered bands or stripes, some types feature “eye” patterns or colored spots, fossilized inclusions, or solid forms. Known as the Earth’s rainbow, Agate’s concentric bands display nearly every natural color, including clear varieties. Historically, Agate has been found alongside Neolithic artifacts and has been valued as a healing amulet and decorative object dating back to Babylon. Its medicinal use persisted through ancient Greek and Egyptian cultures and spread across Africa, the Middle East, and Russia. Agate also gave rise to a famous stone-cutting and polishing tradition in Germany from the 15th to the 19th century that remains active today.
