Upper Cretaceous 96 Million Years Old
In 2018, scientists Nick Longrich, David Martill, and Brian Andres described a new species of pteranodontid called Tethydraco Regalis from the Upper Cretaceous Couche III layer found in the Sidi Daoui phosphate mines near Khouribga, Morocco. These rocks were formed during the last million years of the Mesozoic Era and include some of the final pterosaur species before the K-Pg extinction. Tethydraco is identified mainly by an isolated humerus, which is the holotype, along with other limb bones such as two ulnae, a femur, and an articulated femur and tibia. Its name means “royal Tethys dragon” and refers to the ancient Tethys Ocean that once existed between northern Africa and Eurasia.
