Douvilleiceras Tractor Ammonite
The Tractor Ammonite, scientifically known as Douvilleiceras, is a distinctive genus of extinct cephalopods belonging to the order Ammonitida, widely recognized for its robust, coarsely ribbed shell morphology that resembles a modern tractor tire. These fossils primarily date to the Middle to Late Cretaceous period, specifically thriving during the Albian stage approximately 115 to 100 million years ago. Specimens originating from the northwest coast of Madagascar, particularly the Mahajanga region, are exceptionally well-regarded by collectors and museums alike for their intricate preservation and unique decorative aesthetics.
Morphologically, Douvilleiceras species feature prominent tubercles and heavy ribbing across their whorls, which account for their descriptive moniker. While exceptional specimens like those from Madagascar often measure substantial dimensions—such as weights exceeding 15 kilograms and diameters spanning nearly centimeters—other species like Douvilleiceras inaequinodum typically reach diameters of about 8 to 10 cm.
