Corythosaurus was a type of hadrosaurid dinosaur, often referred to as a “duck-billed” dinosaur because of its flat, broad snout. It lived during the Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous, approximately 80–74 million years ago. This herbivore was equipped with hundreds of tightly packed teeth located toward the back of its jaws, ideal for chewing and grinding tough plant material.
One of the most recognizable features of Corythosaurus was its large, helmet-like crest. This hollow structure enclosed part of the nasal passage, and scientists believe it likely played a role in producing sounds, possibly for communication or display. The dinosaur also possessed a long, sturdy tail and is estimated to have weighed between three and five tons when fully grown.
The first known Corythosaurus fossils were uncovered in the Judith River Formation, which spans from Alberta, Canada, into Montana, USA. The species was formally described in 1914, adding an iconic member to the fossil record of North American dinosaurs.
