The Woolly Rhinoceros was an extraordinary extinct rhinoceros species that roamed the icy landscapes of Europe and northern Asia throughout the Pleistocene epoch. As a powerful representative of the Pleistocene megafauna, this massive Ice Age grazer survived until the closing of the last glacial period, thriving in cold, open steppe environments.
Adult Woolly Rhinos were impressive in size, reaching 9.8–12.5 feet in length and weighing between 4,000 and 6,000 pounds. Their thick fur, robust frame, and long, flattened horn allowed them to forage through snow and endure some of the harshest climates in prehistoric history.
Today, the Woolly Rhinoceros remains one of the most iconic creatures of the Ice Age, highly valued in paleontology, Ice Age fossil collecting, and studies of ancient ecosystems. Its fossils offer a rare glimpse into the remarkable diversity of prehistoric mammals and the megafaunal species that once shaped the northern hemisphere.
