The Woolly Rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) was an extinct species of rhinoceros that thrived across Europe and northern Asia during the Pleistocene epoch, surviving until the end of the last glacial period. It was a prominent member of the Pleistocene megafauna, well-adapted to the cold, harsh climates of the Ice Age.
Adult woolly rhinoceroses could grow to lengths of 9.8 to 12.5 feet and weigh between 4,000 and 6,000 pounds. Their thick, woolly coat protected them from freezing temperatures, while their large, curved horns were used for defence, foraging through snow to reach vegetation, and competing with other rhinoceroses. These massive herbivores primarily fed on grasses and other low-lying plants, roaming the vast icy steppes alongside other megafauna like mammoths and bison.
