Peridot, a gem-quality form of the mineral olivine, is found in multiple sites across Arizona, with Gila County being a notable source. The most well-known site in this area is Peridot Mesa, located on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. This mesa is recognized as one of the most important peridot sources in the United States, where the gem occurs within basalt lava flows. Situated east of Globe, Arizona, the peridot appears as both individual crystals and clusters embedded in the rock. Mining is exclusively conducted by members of the San Carlos Apache Tribe, and visitors must obtain a tribal recreation permit from the San Carlos Apache Recreation and Wildlife Department near Highway 70 east of Globe.

Peridot Mesa is a remnant of a dormant volcano. The peridot is found in the basalt, which is about 3 to 35 meters thick. The peridot grains are typically 6 to 13 millimeters in size.

The area is also known for wildflowers, especially Mexican goldpoppies, which bloom in the spring. The town of Peridot, Arizona, is located within the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. The San Carlos Apache Tribe has been mining peridot for about 50 years, which contributes to the local economy
