145 million years old Upper Jurassic Age
Pyrolusite Dendritic Limestone
The Solnhofen limestone is one of the most significant fossil sites due to its remarkable variety of well-preserved organisms. Buried around 150 million years ago in soft lagoonal sediments, it offers a detailed view of Jurassic marine and terrestrial life. Both articulated skeletons and delicate soft-bodied animals, which typically do not survive fossilization, are found here. Notable fossils include exceptionally preserved jellyfish, crustaceans, squid, fish, and flying reptiles. Among the most important discoveries is Archaeopteryx, the famous “missing link” that combines dinosaur anatomy with feathers, highlighting the evolutionary connection between reptiles and birds. While some specimens were cracked during excavation, skilled restoration has ensured their appearance remains pristine. Most fossils are revealed by splitting the limestone.
