Goniatite Ammonite
Ammonoids dominated the seas from the Devonian to the Cretaceous periods with their boldly coiled shells, inspired by the ram’s horns of the Egyptian god Amun. Though they look like modern Nautiloids, their closest living cousins are actually octopi, squid, and cuttlefish. Their shells were crafted with chambers separated by septa, whose bold suture patterns tell the story of their evolution. The early Goniatites flaunted a sharp zigzag "Goniatitic" pattern, while the later Ammonites revealed intricate, fern-like sutures that challenge the eye and captivate fossil enthusiasts.
