Conopygus Sea Urchin
Conopygus Sea Urchins are a group of marine invertebrates that can be found today in nearly every major marine habitat—from the poles to the equator and from the intertidal zone to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. There are around 800 living species, and the group has a rich fossil record dating back about 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly known as “Sea Biscuits,” the term Echinoid is derived from the Latin word for “pickle.” When alive, these fascinating creatures were covered with movable spines that provided both protection and mobility along the sea floor.
