Conopygus Sea Urchin

Conopygus Sea Urchins belong to a fascinating group of marine invertebrates that have thrived in the world’s oceans for hundreds of millions of years. Today, their relatives inhabit nearly every marine environment — from polar waters to tropical seas, and from shallow coastal zones to depths greater than 5,000 meters. With around 800 living species, sea urchins have an extensive fossil record that dates back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Often called “Sea Biscuits,” the name Echinoid comes from the Latin word for “pickle.” In life, these creatures were protected by a hard shell and covered with movable spines that helped them defend themselves and move along the seafloor.
