Conopygus Sea Urchin
Conopygus Sea Urchins belong to a diverse group of marine invertebrates that can be found across nearly all major marine habitats — from the poles to the equator and from shallow intertidal zones to ocean depths exceeding 5,000 meters. With around 800 living species, this group has a remarkably detailed fossil record that extends back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly referred to as “Sea Biscuits,” the term Echinoid comes from the Latin word meaning “pickle.” When alive, these creatures were covered in movable spines that offered protection and aided in movement along the seafloor.
