Conopygus Sea Urchin
Conopygus Sea Urchins are a group of marine invertebrates that today inhabit nearly every major marine environment—from the poles to the equator and from shallow intertidal zones to ocean depths exceeding 5,000 meters. With around 800 living species, this group has a long and detailed fossil record dating back approximately 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly known as “Sea Biscuits,” the term Echinoid is derived from the Latin word for “pickle.” When alive, these animals were covered with movable spines that provided both protection and a means of locomotion.
