Agate refers to many types of banded Chalcedony, a member of the Quartz family. Its name originates from the Achates River in Sicily, the location of the first Agate discoveries. Characteristically, Agate forms in layers or stripes, often displaying unique patterns such as "eye" markings or color specks. Some varieties contain fossilized inclusions, while others are uniform in color. Known as the Earth’s rainbow, Agate exhibits concentric bands in almost every hue found on the planet, including a rare colorless form. Its diverse appearances and natural beauty have made it a sought-after mineral for collectors and artisans alike.

Agate has a rich history dating back to Neolithic times, where it was found alongside artifacts and used as healing amulets and decorative items as far back as Babylon. Its medicinal applications persisted through ancient Greek and Egyptian cultures and spread across Africa, the Middle East, and into Russia. The stone also inspired a renowned stone cutting and polishing tradition in Germany, thriving from the 15th through the 19th centuries and continuing to this day.
