Agate refers to multiple types of banded Chalcedony, a Quartz-family mineral. Its name originates from the Achates River in Sicily, the site of its initial discovery. Typically exhibiting layered or striped banding, certain varieties feature "eye" patterns, color specks, fossilized inclusions, or are solid in appearance. Known as the Earth’s rainbow, Agate’s concentric bands appear in almost every natural color, including a transparent variant.
Agate has been unearthed with Neolithic artifacts and served as a healing charm and decorative item since Babylonian times. Its therapeutic applications persisted through ancient Greek and Egyptian cultures and extended across Africa, the Middle East, and into Russia. This mineral also gave rise to a distinguished stone-cutting and polishing tradition in Germany, thriving from the 15th to the 19th century and still active today.
