Agate encompasses various types of banded Chalcedony, a mineral within the Quartz family. Its designation derives from the Achates River in Sicily, the source of these stones. Characteristically layered or striped, Agates may feature distinctive "eye" patterns, flecks of color, fossilized inclusions, or present as solid forms. Often referred to as the Earth’s rainbow, the concentric bands of Agate appear in almost every hue nature offers, including a rare colorless variety.

Agate has been found with Neolithic artifacts and was traditionally used as a healing amulet and decorative item, with origins tracing back to Babylon. Its therapeutic applications extended through ancient Greek and Egyptian societies and later spread across Africa, the Middle East, and into Russia. Additionally, Agate inspired a notable stone-cutting and polishing industry in Germany, which prospered from the 15th to the 19th century and remains active today.
