Agate refers to many types of banded Chalcedony, a Quartz family mineral. Its name originates from the Achates River in Sicily, where it was initially discovered. Typically featuring layered bands or stripes, some agates display "eye" patterns, color specks, fossil inclusions, or are solid in color. Known as the Earth’s rainbow, agate’s concentric bands appear in almost every natural hue, including clear varieties. Historically, agate has been found alongside Neolithic artifacts and served as a healing amulet and decorative item since Babylonian times. Its therapeutic use continued through ancient Greek and Egyptian cultures and spread across Africa, the Middle East, and Russia. The stone fueled a renowned stone-cutting and polishing tradition in Germany from the 15th century, which remains active today.
