Agate encompasses a diverse range of banded Chalcedony varieties within the Quartz family. Its name is derived from the Achates River in Sicily, the source of these stones. Commonly exhibiting layered bands or stripes, some specimens display distinctive "eye" patterns, flecks of color, fossilized inclusions, or are uniformly solid. Often referred to as the Earth’s rainbow, Agate’s concentric layers appear in almost every hue found in nature, including a rare colorless form, embodying both geological complexity and visual elegance.
Agate has been found alongside Neolithic artifacts and was traditionally used as healing amulets and decorative items, with roots tracing back to Babylon. Its healing properties were embraced by ancient Greek and Egyptian societies and later spread across Africa, the Middle East, and into Russia. This valued stone also inspired a renowned stone-cutting and polishing craft in Germany, which prospered from the 15th through the 19th centuries and continues to this day.
