Agate is a charming name for many types of banded Chalcedony, a Quartz family gem. It got its name from the Achates River in Sicily, where these beauties were first spotted. Usually striped in layers, some agates show funky "eye" spots or colorful specks, others have ancient fossils trapped inside, and some are just solid. Often called Earth’s rainbow, agate flaunts concentric bands in almost every hue imaginable—even clear! This stone has a history as colorful as its bands, found with Neolithic tools and used as lucky charms and decorations all the way back to Babylon. It worked its magic through ancient Greece, Egypt, Africa, the Middle East, and even Russia. Plus, agate inspired a legendary German stone-cutting craze that’s still going strong today!
