Gabbro
Gabbro is a coarse-grained, dark-colored intrusive igneous rock formed from the slow cooling of magnesium-rich and iron-rich magma deep within the Earth’s crust. While its mineral composition is similar to basalt, gabbro has a much coarser texture due to its slow cooling, whereas basalt cools rapidly and is fine-grained.
Mineral Composition
The primary minerals in gabbro include:
-
Plagioclase Feldspar: Typically calcium-rich, often in the form of labradorite or bytownite, forming a major component of gabbro.
-
Pyroxene: Most commonly clinopyroxene, usually augite. Orthopyroxene may also occur in specific gabbro varieties.
-
Olivine: Present in some types, especially olivine gabbros.
-
Accessory Minerals: Minor amounts of hornblende (in hornblende gabbros), biotite, magnetite, ilmenite, and apatite may be present.
-
Quartz and Feldspathoids: Certain subtypes, like quartz gabbros or foid-bearing gabbros, contain small amounts of quartz or feldspathoids.
