Cretaceous Age 83-70 Million Years Old.
Name: Maiasaura
Type: Herbivore
Size: 9 meters in length.
Maiasaura was a large herbivorous duck-billed dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 65 to 70 million years ago. Fossils of this hadrosaur have been discovered in the Two Medicine Formation near Choteau, where one of the most significant dinosaur nesting sites ever found was uncovered in 1978. These discoveries provided valuable insight into dinosaur behavior, growth, and reproduction, making Maiasaura one of the best-studied hadrosaurs in paleontology.
This dinosaur is characterized by a short, wide, toothless beak designed for cropping vegetation and jaws filled with hundreds of tightly packed teeth capable of grinding tough plant material. A small bony crest between the eyes distinguished its low-profile skull, while its long tail helped maintain balance. Like other duck-billed dinosaurs, Maiasaura had longer hind limbs than forelimbs, allowing it to switch between walking on two legs and moving on all fours.
Growth studies suggest that Maiasaura reached adult size in about seven to eight years, eventually growing to around eight meters in length and weighing roughly four metric tons. Its combination of advanced chewing adaptations and evidence of nesting behavior has made Maiasaura a key species for understanding social and parental care among dinosaurs.
