Botryoidal Hematite
Hematite, a widely abundant iron oxide mineral, flaunts colors from steely gray to nearly black in its specular form. Its rainbow variety dazzles with shimmering hues like oil slicks on water, often strengthened by a quartz backing in its drusy form for extra toughness. Though it wears many faces, every hematite rock leaves behind a signature rust-red streak. Tougher than pure iron but more fragile, hematite’s name comes from the Greek word for blood, haimatites. Mined across the globe—from Australia to Brazil, England to the U.S.—it’s Alabama’s prized state mineral. Even Mars is painted in hematite’s red, first spotted by the Mars Global Surveyor’s Thermal Emission Spectrometer.
