Goniatite Ammonite
Ammonoids were remarkable sea creatures that thrived from the Devonian to the Cretaceous periods. Their name originates from the distinctive "ram's horn" shape of their shells, inspired by the Egyptian god Amun, who was shown with curved horns. Though similar in appearance to modern Nautiloids, Ammonoids are more closely related to octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish. Their shells were divided into chambers by septa, which formed unique suture patterns critical for identification. Early Goniatites display a striking zigzag "Goniatitic" pattern of smooth lobes and saddles, while later Ammonites reveal intricate, fern-like designs—a fascinating detail that makes these fossils truly captivating.
