Basilosaurus: The Ancient “King Lizard” of the Seas

Around 40 to 34 million years ago, during the Late Eocene Period, the oceans were ruled by a fearsome predator — the Basilosaurus. Despite its name meaning “king lizard,” this giant was no reptile at all, but an early whale. The confusion arose in the 19th century when its remains were first discovered in the United States and mistakenly identified as belonging to a massive sea serpent.

Basilosaurus was an impressive sight, stretching up to 70 feet in length and weighing around 15 tons. Its long, slender body and sharp, interlocking teeth reveal that it was built for hunting. This whale possessed a bite force of about 2,300 pounds, powerful enough to crush bone and tear through flesh with ease.

A true apex predator of its time, Basilosaurus likely preyed upon large fish, smaller whales, and any marine animal unfortunate enough to cross its path. Its strength and size made it one of the most formidable creatures of the ancient seas — a reminder that even in prehistory, the oceans had their kings.
