Oligocene Age 33 - 23 million years ago

The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia) is one of the most remarkable prehistoric conifers, originating over 100 million years ago during the age of dinosaurs. Fossils reveal that it once thrived in lush forests across Asia, Europe, and North America, where it played a major role in prehistoric ecosystems.

Long thought extinct and known only from fossilized leaves, cones, and wood, the genus was rediscovered alive in central China in 1944, earning it the title of a living fossil tree. Metasequoia is a deciduous conifer, shedding needles seasonally—a trait preserved from its ancient ancestors.

Modern Dawn Redwoods are fast-growing ornamental trees, developing a symmetrical pyramidal crown and reaching heights of up to 120 feet. Fossil specimens of Metasequoia are highly valued by collectors, educators, and museums, providing insight into ancient climates, prehistoric forests, and plant evolution, and connecting modern landscapes with Earth’s deep botanical history.
