Goniatite Ammonite

Ammonoids were marine cephalopods that thrived from the Devonian to the Cretaceous periods. Their name derives from the distinctive “ram’s horn” shape of their shells, inspired by the Egyptian deity Amun, often depicted with ram’s horns. Though they resemble modern Nautiloids, their closest living relatives are believed to be octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish. These fossils feature shells segmented into chambers by septa, whose connections to the outer shell form intricate suture patterns essential for classification. Early Goniatites display a refined zigzag “Goniatitic” pattern of smooth lobes and saddles, whereas later Ammonites exhibit more elaborate, fern-like sutures.
