Corythosaurus is a genus of “duck-billed” hadrosaurid dinosaurs that lived during the Late Cretaceous, roughly 80 to 74 million years ago. This time falls within the Campanian stage of the Cretaceous period in the Mesozoic Era. As plant-eaters, they relied on hundreds of small, interlocking teeth positioned at the back of the jaws, which were effective for grinding tough vegetation.
One of the most distinctive features of Corythosaurus was the tall, bony crest rising from its head. This crest housed part of the nasal passage and may have functioned as a resonating chamber for producing sounds, possibly for communication. The dinosaur also had a long, muscular tail and is estimated to have weighed between three and five tons.
The first Corythosaurus fossils were found in the Judith River Formation—a geological region stretching from Alberta, Canada, into Montana in the United States—and the genus was officially described in 1914.
