Botryoidal Hematite
Hematite is a widely found mineral made of iron oxide, ranging in color from steel gray to nearly black in its specular form. The rainbow hematite variety shines with colors like oil on water, often strengthened with a quartz backing when in its drusy form. Though its appearance changes, it always leaves a rust-red streak. Harder than pure iron but more brittle, the name hematite comes from the Greek word for blood. You can find it in places like Australia, Brazil, England, Mexico, the US, and Canada. It's also Alabama’s state mineral, with huge amounts mined there in the past. Hematite is common on Earth and is even found across Mars, where it gives the planet its famous red color, discovered by a NASA Mars mission.
