Corythosaurus was a genus of hadrosaurid, or “duck-billed,” dinosaurs that lived during the Upper Cretaceous Period, approximately 80 to 74 million years ago, within the Campanian age of the Mesozoic Era. As herbivores, they possessed hundreds of small interlocking teeth located at the back of their jaws, perfectly adapted for crushing and grinding tough plant material.
One of the most striking features of Corythosaurus was its large bony crest positioned on top of the head. This crest housed part of the nasal passage and is believed to have functioned as a resonating chamber, allowing the dinosaur to produce deep calls for communication or display. Corythosaurus also had a long, heavy tail and is estimated to have weighed between three and five tons as an adult.
The first fossils of Corythosaurus were discovered in the Judith River Formation, a famous fossil site extending from Alberta, Canada, into Montana, USA. The dinosaur was officially described in 1914, marking the beginning of over a century of scientific study on this fascinating “helmet-crested” hadrosaur.
