Triceratops was a massive herbivorous dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 68 to 66 million years ago. As one of the last surviving non-avian dinosaurs, Triceratops thrived in what is now western North America. This large quadrupedal ceratopsid weighed between 5 and 9 metric tons and could reach lengths of up to 30 feet, making it one of the largest horned dinosaurs ever discovered.
Triceratops is best known for its impressive skull, which featured three prominent facial horns and a broad bony frill extending from the back of the head. The two long brow horns above the eyes were the most striking, while the smaller nasal horn projected from the snout. The frill itself was edged with small triangular projections, adding to its dramatic appearance. This elaborate head structure likely served for defense, display, and possibly combat within the species.
Living alongside formidable predators such as Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops relied on its horns and sheer size as protection. Today, it remains one of the most iconic dinosaurs in paleontology and a symbol of Late Cretaceous wildlife.
