Name: Maiasaura
Type: Herbivore
Size: 9 meters in length.
Among North America’s most famous dinosaurs, Maiasaura stands out because of remarkable fossil discoveries that revealed evidence of nesting colonies and possible parental care. The discovery of numerous nests in the Two Medicine Formation near Choteau in 1978 transformed scientific understanding of dinosaur behavior, showing that some hadrosaurs may have raised their young in organized groups.
Maiasaura was a large duck-billed herbivore that could reach around eight meters in length and weigh about four metric tons. Its broad beak lacked teeth at the tip but worked alongside powerful dental batteries filled with hundreds of grinding teeth, ideal for processing tough plants. A small bony crest between the eyes and a long tail gave it a recognizable silhouette among hadrosaur dinosaurs.
With strong hind legs and shorter forelimbs, Maiasaura was capable of walking on two legs or moving on all fours while feeding. Rapid growth rates indicate that juveniles matured quickly, helping maintain large herd populations within their prehistoric environment.
