Lambeosaurus was a dinosaur that lived approximately 83.6 - 70.6 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous Period. It was named Lambeosaurus to honor Lawrence Lambe, and its name literally means “Lambe’s lizard.”This dinosaur was approximately 40 to 50 feet long, 7 feet tall at the hips, and probably weighed in the neighborhood of 5 tons. This dinosaur had a duckbill, an impressive bony crest on top of its skull, and it was a bipedal herbivore that was probably capable of running at around 30 miles per hour. Speed would have been needed to achieve this because of the many carnivores of the time.
Lambeosaurus was the first hadrosaurid discovered in North America, with numerous specimens unearthed not only near Alberta, Canada, but also in Montana, USA, and Baja California, Mexico. Its diet likely comprised the regional flora of the time, including conifers, ginkgos, and magnolias. A distinctive feature of Lambeosaurus is its predominantly hollow cranial crest, which has led to several hypotheses regarding its function. Some researchers propose it housed salt glands, others suggest it enhanced olfactory capabilities, while a prevailing theory posits the crest acted as a resonating chamber for sound production. Fossil evidence also implies these dinosaurs formed large herds, which may have provided defense against predators and facilitated the protection of juveniles within the group.
