Agate encompasses a striking range of banded Chalcedony varieties, part of the Quartz family. Its name traces back to Sicily’s Achates River, the source of these stones. Typically layered or striped, some reveal bold “eye” patterns, vivid color specks, fossilized inclusions, or solid hues. Known as the Earth’s rainbow, agate’s concentric bands blaze in almost every color the planet can unleash, even crystal clear.
Agate has been found alongside Neolithic artifacts and was traditionally used as healing amulets and decorative objects as far back as Babylon. Its medicinal applications persisted through ancient Greek and Egyptian cultures and extended across Africa, the Middle East, and into Russia. This remarkable stone also inspired a globally recognized cutting and polishing industry in Germany, which thrived from the 15th to the 19th century and continues to this day.
