Triassic Age, 220 Million Years Old

Koskinonodon (often historically associated with Metoposaurus) was a large temnospondyl amphibian that lived during the Late Triassic period, filling predator roles similar to modern crocodilians. Reaching lengths of up to 10 feet, this prehistoric amphibian occupied freshwater environments where it likely hunted by ambush. Its broad, elongated skull and wide jaws were well-suited for snapping up fish and other small animals that came within reach.

Fossils of Koskinonodon have been discovered in Late Triassic deposits across the southwestern United States, particularly within the Chinle Formation. These finds provide important evidence of ecosystems that existed before the rise of dinosaurs as dominant terrestrial animals. The species is thought to have spent much of its time partially submerged, waiting for prey in rivers or shallow wetlands.

As a representative of the temnospondyl amphibians, Koskinonodon highlights a period when giant amphibians thrived in aquatic predator niches. Its anatomy and fossil record offer valuable insight into the evolution of early tetrapods and the diversity of Late Triassic life.
