Agate refers to many kinds of banded Chalcedony, a mineral within the Quartz family. Its name is derived from the Achates River in Sicily, where these stones were originally discovered. Agates commonly display layered bands or stripes; some show unique "eye" patterns or color spots, others contain fossilized inclusions, and some are uniformly solid. Known as the Earth’s rainbow, agate’s concentric bands can appear in almost every color found in nature, including a transparent, colorless variety.

Agate’s story stretches back to Babylon, where it was found alongside Neolithic artifacts, prized as powerful healing amulets and striking ornaments. Its legendary medicinal powers carried through the ancient Greek and Egyptian worlds before storming across Africa, the Middle East, and Russia. This extraordinary stone ignited a legendary stone-cutting and polishing industry in Germany that blazed from the 15th to the 19th century—and still thrives today.
