Septarian Dragon Stone:
Septarian is a unique and visually striking stone found in only a few regions around the world. In the United States, notable deposits occur near Zion National Park in Southern Utah, while other major sources include Mahajanga in Madagascar and Morocco. These fascinating stones were formed on ancient seafloors during the Cretaceous Period, approximately 50–70 million years ago. Over time, they became exposed as they weathered out of gray or tan clay hills and could once be collected directly from the surface. Today, however, excavation typically requires bulldozers, as most nodules are buried 20–30 feet underground. Each septarian nodule is distinctive, varying widely in color, pattern, and shape, which adds to its appeal among collectors and artisans.
A typical septarian nodule is composed of several distinct minerals:
-
Yellow centers – Calcite
-
Brown lines – Aragonite
-
Gray rock – Bentonite
-
White or clear areas – Barite
Septarian is also commonly known as “Dragon Stone,” a name rooted in an ancient Malagasy legend that likened its bold, cracked patterns to the scales of a dragon.
