Cretaceous Dinosaur Era, 100 million years ago.
Onchopristis was a colossal sawfish that inhabited the seas during the Upper Cretaceous Period, with numerous specimens discovered in the Sahara Desert. This species is notable for its lengthy rostrum, approximately 2.5 meters long, edged with sharp barbs—earning it the name "Giant Saw." Primarily feeding on crustaceans, Onchopristis likely used its serrated snout to dig prey from shallow marine environments, similar to modern sawfish. Fossil records suggest that, like salmon, they migrated into freshwater rivers for spawning, where juveniles found refuge from predators. However, adults faced dangers from predators like Spinosaurus, which hunted them during these migrations. Evidence of interaction includes puncture wounds on Onchopristis rostra and even barbs embedded in spinosaurid jaws. Despite frequent droughts reducing their numbers, Onchopristis survived through large populations during these perilous seasonal movements.
