Gabbro
Gabbro is a dark, coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock formed from the slow cooling of magnesium- and iron-rich magma deep within the Earth’s crust. Its mineral composition, primarily plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene, is similar to basalt, but gabbro’s slow cooling produces a much coarser texture compared to the fine-grained basalt.
Mineral Composition of Gabbro
-
Plagioclase Feldspar: Typically calcium-rich (labradorite or bytownite) and forms a major portion of gabbro’s mineral content.
-
Pyroxene: Mainly clinopyroxene (usually augite); some varieties also contain orthopyroxene.
-
Olivine: Present in certain types, especially olivine gabbros.
-
Accessory Minerals: May include minor amounts of hornblende (in hornblende gabbros), biotite, magnetite, ilmenite, and apatite.
-
Quartz and Feldspathoids: Found in small quantities in subtypes like quartz gabbros or foid-bearing gabbros.
