Agate refers to various types of banded Chalcedony, which is a member of the Quartz mineral family. The name originates from the Achates River in Sicily, where these stones were first identified. Agates typically feature layered bands or stripes, and some varieties include distinctive "eye" patterns, color specks, fossilized inclusions, or appear solid. Often called the earth’s rainbow, Agate’s concentric bands display almost every color found in nature, including colorless forms. Archaeological findings reveal that Agate was used by Neolithic peoples as healing amulets and decorative items, with such uses continuing through ancient Babylon, Greece, and Egypt, eventually spreading to Africa, the Middle East, and Russia. Additionally, Agate played a significant role in developing a renowned stone cutting and polishing tradition in Germany from the 15th to 19th centuries, which endures today.
