Agate encompasses many varieties of banded Chalcedony, a Quartz family mineral. Its name is derived from the Achates River in Sicily, the location of its first discovery. Typically, Agate features layered or striped patterns, with some types showing "eye" spots, color flecks, fossilized inclusions, or solid coloration. Referred to as the Earth’s rainbow, Agate’s concentric bands occur in almost every color found naturally, including a colorless version.
Agate has a fascinating past—found alongside Neolithic artifacts, it was treasured as healing amulets and stylish adornments all the way back to Babylon. Its healing reputation continued through ancient Greek and Egyptian times and journeyed across Africa, the Middle East, and right into Russia. This remarkable stone even kicked off a famous stone cutting and polishing craze in Germany that boomed from the 15th to the 19th century—and it’s still alive and kicking today!
