Name: Mosasaurus

Named By: Dollo - 1889.

Size: Depending upon the species, Mosasaur could range between 6 to possibly just under 14 meters in length.

Known locations: Fossil locations suggest a worldwide distribution, but are especially well-known from Europe and North America.

Time period: Campanian to Maastrichtian of the Cretaceous.

Mosasaurs were the largest lizards to ever exist, growing up to nearly 60 feet long with skulls measuring 6 feet. These formidable marine reptiles were expert swimmers, spending their entire lives in the ocean. Their long, powerful bodies were perfectly adapted for swimming, using a snake-like motion combined with a finned tail for propulsion and small webbed feet for steering. Living during the late Cretaceous period, from around 96 to 65 million years ago, mosasaurs were fierce carnivores that preyed on fish, turtles, sea urchins, and shellfish. They coexisted with dinosaurs and, like them, went extinct during the Cretaceous-Tertiary mass extinction. This fossil jaw section offers a remarkable glimpse into a dominant predator of a lost world.
