Agate refers to a wide range of banded Chalcedony varieties, a member of the Quartz mineral family. The name originates from the Achates River in Sicily, where these stones were first discovered. Typically featuring layered or striped patterns, Agates can also display "eye" shapes, color specks, fossilized inclusions, or be completely solid. Known as the earth’s rainbow, Agate's concentric bands appear in almost every color found in nature, including a transparent form.

Agate has been found alongside Neolithic artifacts and was used as both healing amulets and decorative items as far back as Babylon. Its medicinal significance persisted through ancient Greek and Egyptian societies and extended across Africa, the Middle East, and into Russia. This stone also played a key role in establishing a renowned stone cutting and polishing tradition in Germany, which prospered between the 15th and 19th centuries and continues today.
