Agate refers to many types of banded Chalcedony, a quartz mineral named after the Achates River in Sicily, where it was first discovered. Typically showing layered stripes, some agates have distinctive “eye” patterns, spots of color, fossilized inclusions, or solid shades. Often called the earth’s rainbow, agate’s concentric bands appear in nearly every color found in nature, even a colorless variety. Historically, agate has been found with Neolithic artifacts and has been used as healing charms and decorative items since Babylonian times. Its healing properties were recognized by ancient Greek and Egyptian cultures and spread across Africa, the Middle East, and Russia. Agate also inspired a famous stone cutting and polishing tradition in Germany from the 15th century onward, which continues today.
