Amazonite is a gemstone of considerable antiquity, highly regarded for its aesthetic appeal and therapeutic properties over millennia. This pale green mineral has been intricately carved into statues, amulets, and gemstones, as well as inscribed with significant texts in ancient times. Its rich historical significance underpins its meaning and enduring value. The people of pre-Columbian South and Central America esteemed amazonite, with evidence of its use dating back to the 10th century BC. According to tradition, the warrior women of Brazil’s ancient Amazon tribe utilized amazonite for adorning shields, treating illnesses, and healing wounds—core aspects of its symbolic meaning. It is also believed that these women gifted amazonite to visiting men. European conquistadors favored amazonite jewelry, valuing both its symbolic importance and its workable nature. In ancient Egypt, amazonite slabs were engraved with Chapter Seven, The Judgment of Osiris, from the Book of the Dead, and the stone was fashioned into jewelry. Egyptians associated amazonite with fertility and good fortune, crafting amulets believed to enhance reproductive health—key benefits integral to its legacy. Notably, a scarab ring and other carved amazonite artifacts were found among Tutankhamun’s treasures. Known as "The Amazon Stone," amazonite derives its name from the Amazon River in South America, where it was initially identified. While no deposits remain in the Amazon Basin today, amazonite continues to be sourced from regions including Brazil, the United States (Colorado and Virginia), Australia, and Madagascar.
